2018 North American Gathering

15-17th June, 2018
Chicago, USA

Our gathering took place in Itasca Illinois at the Highland Games on June 15th through 17th 2018.

We had a wonderful get together and enjoyed the comradery of the Merrilees Clan and the activies of the Highland games. Clan Merrilees, the honored clan of the event, led the afternoon Parade to the sound of pipers playing.

We watched traditional highland games, and the piper’s band competitions. We enjoyed checking out vintage cars and watched the Dogs of Scotland compete. There was a stage with music and dancing and lots of foods including everyone’s favorite, haggis.

There were shops with everything Scottish from cakes to clothes, leather goods, fantastic honey that smelled like heather, and all sorts of clan memorabilia.

There were family tree genealogists on hand but we have our own family tree detective Mike Mirrilees who holds the key to our family history.

We spent a lot of time getting to know other members of our family no matter what the spelling. At the end of the games we all enjoyed a fantastic taco party at The Hyatt hotel.

At 5:45 on Sunday morning there was a golf tournament to determine the winner of the coveted Bob Merrilees Claret Jug. This year’s winner was Randy Merilees who will retain the cup until the next tournament. In the afternoon Mike and Bunny Mirrilees hosted a wonderful meal at their home to celebrate the end of the 2018 Gathering.

A big Thank you to Mike and Bunny Mirrilees for all their hard work and organizational skills!!
