Four great-grandaughters of Helen Hamilton Merrilees and Dr Patrick Fletcher [insets] were photographed in the Taieri Gorge on the Merrilees Train Trip.

Dr Fletcher was appointed medical officer for the workforce building the railway in 1889 and for a time the family lived at Hindon where we stopped for our barbecue.

POST-GATHERING
TRAIL BLAZERS...

Not content with taking the Merrilees Train Excursion on the Taieri Gorge Railway these intrepid cousins decided to explore the Otago Central Rail Trail. This is now a popular cycling track along the path where the railway used to run from Middlemarch to Clyde. Starting from opposite ends,Vaughan & Barbara Merrylees from Rotorua (left) and Linsay Merrylees from Auckland (below having a well-earned drink), were surprised to meet up near the Prices Creek tunnel, not far from Hyde.
